Your Australian Labradoodle’s Vocabulary

So you have taught your dog the basics. He knows sit, come, and stay. He knows his name and maybe the names of your family members. Have you ever had to spell a word while your dog is within hearing distance?

“Honey, would you like to go for a w-a-l-k after dinner?”Brandy and Ethan

You don’t think much about how many words your dog may know. It may surprise you to know that the average dog can have a vocabulary of 165 words! With training it could even be more. If you would like to increase your labradoodle’s vocabulary, it just takes a little effort and consistency on your part.

Here are some tips:

  1. Focus on one word at a time until your dog seems to retain it.
  2. Simple words like “walk” will be better than “exercise”.
  3. Your dog will try to understand what you are saying by reading your body language as well as what you are saying, so pay attention to your movements as well.
  4. Be consistent. Make sure each member of your household calls something by the same name. For example, if you call the evening meal “dinner” and your spouse calls it “supper”, that can be confusing to your dog.

Have fun your dog and train them at the same time!
